Musica Secreta with Tesserae Baroque
Tesserae returns to the Sierra Madre Playhouse to present an intimate evening of music from the late 16th-century Ferrarese court. Expanding on Ian Pritchard’s program Ferrara 1590 from last season, this program will feature music that was likely performed for the Duke’s musica secreta—exclusive and intimate private concerts held at the court. The most famous performers at the musica secreta were the concerto delle donne, established in Ferrara and quickly imitated at other courts in northern Italy. Known historically for being one of the first professional female ensembles in Europe, the donne were also known for their extraordinary virtuosity and musicianship. In Ferrrara, they were occasionally joined by the Neapolitan knight Giulio Cesare Brancaccio, known for his powerful bass voice in addition to his incredibly eccentric personality. Featuring sopranos Anna Schubert and Addy Sterrett, baritone John Buffett, and harpsichordist Ian Pritchard.

Doug Aitken's Lightscape
Lightscape is an innovative multimedia artwork created by the artist Doug Aitken in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. It’s a modern mythology propelled by music that asks the questions, “where are we now?” and “where are we going?” Lightscape is a shapeshifting act of contemporary storytelling that unfolds in various stages: a feature-length film, a multi-screen fine art installation, and a series of live musical performances.
The world premiere of the concert iteration of Lightscape caps off the LA Phil’s daylong Noon to Midnight: Field Recordings festival, with Grant Gershon leading the LA Phil New Music Group and the Los Angeles Master Chorale in a hypnotic series of original soundscapes and minimalist compositions to accompany Doug Aitken’s vivid moving images.
Contemporary: Jewish Voices - Seraphic Fire
The voices of today’s Jewish composers ring out in a program for choir a cappella conducted by Associate Conductor James K. Bass. Shirim L'yom Tov, a set of celebratory songs by Pulitzer-prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran, offers wisdom and inspiration. The contemporary sounds and thought-provoking music of Lera Auerbach, David Lang, and Sid Robinovitch examine the rich tapestry of the Jewish experience. This concert is about more than music: it’s an exploration of culture and connection.
